All students must fill out form 8843 by June 15

- Apr/2018

Most people are not aware, but all international students and their dependents who present in the US under F, J, M and Q nonimmigrant status must file form 8843, “Statement for Exempt individuals”, even if they received NO US-sourced income during the past year.

Please note that Form 8843 is not a US income tax return. It is an informational return required by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), to be filed by certain non-immigrant visa holders in order to confirm their tax-exempt status. Failing to provide Form 8843 may result in future US taxation over the individual’s worldwide income.

If the individual is not required to file a US income tax return, he/she will still need to file Form 8843 before the IRS by June 15, 2018. Complying with US tax regulations is mandatory in order to benefit from the tax exemption during the duration of his/her status and the fulfillment of other tax obligations may be applicable depending on the case.
