Demand for Wind Energy Technicians in the US to Increase by 44.9% in 10 Years

The projection indicates that by 2032, more than 16,000 new positions in the wind energy sector will be available in the US, with an average salary of around $56.2 thousand per year.

The rapid growth of renewable energy usage in the United States has contributed to an increasing number of jobs in the field. The industry specialized in manufacturing wind turbines, for instance, has generated approximately $5 billion annually, employing over 26,000 professionals.

Data from the US Labor Department, analyzed by HR consultancy HAYMAN-WOODWARD Human Capital, forecasts a 44.9% growth in the next 10 years for new vacancies for wind turbine maintenance technicians, rising from 11.2 thousand in 2022 to 16.2 thousand in 2032.

Several factors may account for the demand for these professionals in the United States. The American government has introduced various tax incentives to boost wind tower construction. Moreover, the wind energy market has been deemed essential for critical infrastructures and faced no operational disruptions during COVID-19. “The virtual shift in the country during the lockdown demanded a substantial amount of electricity. The production tax credit in the industry also mandates the use of clean energy. Additionally, the investments in renewable energies have further increased the demand for wind energy,” stated HAYMAN-WOODWARD’s CEO Leonardo Freitas.

Freitas also highlighted that over the years, numerous training programs for wind energy technicians have emerged in the US. “This includes vocational schools, internal training, community colleges, privately and state-funded schools, like those found in New Mexico, along with the establishment of standardized training organizations like the Global Wind Organization (GWO),” he added.

Steps to Work as a Wind Turbine Technician in the US

The initial step to reside and work in the United States as a wind turbine technician involves applying for a resident visa of types EB3 or EB2. Additionally, obtaining necessary qualifications such as courses and certifications is essential. Here are some steps to consider:

1. Attend and Graduate from an Accredited School: After choosing a school, attending the necessary classes is crucial to receive a wind turbine technology certificate or an Associate in Applied Sciences diploma. These classes involve lectures and extracurricular hands-on experiences. Many programs provide fieldwork experience as students learn various components of a wind turbine, such as installation and repair.Other courses and subjects might include mechanical and braking systems, hydraulic and electrical maintenance, computer programming and control systems, CPR training, first aid, and rescue.
2. Practical Training: Post-graduation, practical training is recommended. Interested individuals should seek suitable locations for a year-long training period in their desired work areas. During practical training, employees learn more about specific types of wind turbines for repair and installation. They also gain a better understanding of regular duties and responsibilities through firsthand experience.Trainees usually shadow professional wind turbine technicians during the initial months, gradually progressing to independently installing, repairing, and maintaining wind turbines with minimal supervision.
3. Internship Participation: Although not mandatory, some wind turbine technicians may opt for internships to further understand job duties and responsibilities.
