Joe Biden Institutes New Asylum Measure at US-Mexico Border
William Carriello
Posted on Wed Jun 5US President Joe Biden has instituted a new restrictive measure on asylum for migrants crossing the US-Mexico border illegally. This measure, aimed at strengthening border security, takes effect right after midnight and comes at a critical time, just before the November elections that will decide control of the White House.
What’s Changing with the New Measure
Migrants caught crossing illegally may be quickly deported or sent back to Mexico. However, there are exceptions for unaccompanied children, people facing serious threats to their health or safety, and victims of human trafficking, according to the US Department of Homeland Security.
During a White House press conference, Biden explained that migrants can still apply for asylum if they schedule an appointment using the CBP One app or use other legal channels, instead of crossing illegally.
